Surrounded But Safe: Finding True Security When the World Feels Unsafe

From unexpected security updates on the news to the collective anxiety we all feel about our safety, the challenges around us are very real.

It is easy to look at the headlines and feel utterly defenseless.
But as believers, we have an invisible, impenetrable shield that the world cannot see, comprehend, or replicate. When earthly systems falter, our ultimate reality remains unchanged: you are secured by God.

The Night the Enemy Was Outnumbered (But Didn’t Know It)
If you feel surrounded by fear right now, you are in good company. Thousands of years ago, a young servant woke up in the city of Dothan, stepped outside, and felt his heart drop into his stomach.
The Syrian army had surrounded the city overnight with horses and chariots, specifically targeting the prophet Elisha. Terrified, the servant ran back inside and cried, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” (2 Kings 6:15).
Elisha’s response is one of the most powerful declarations of faith in scripture:
“Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” — 2 Kings 6:16
Elisha didn’t look at the physical army; he looked at the spiritual reality. He prayed for the young man’s eyes to be opened. When they were, the servant saw a breathtaking sight: the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
God didn’t just protect them; He completely neutralized the threat without a single blow being struck by Elisha. The enemy thought they had trapped God’s people, but they were actually trapped by God’s presence.
How to Activate and Enjoy Divine Covering
God’s security isn’t a passive insurance policy; it’s an active, relational shield. While God is sovereign,

Scripture gives us clear keys on how to position ourselves under His divine canopy of protection.

1. Dwell in the Secret Place
Psalm 91:1 promises, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
What it means: To “dwell” means to live there, not just visit when things go wrong. Make daily prayer, worship, and Bible study your baseline habit. When you stay close to the Father, His shadow naturally covers you.

2. Guard Your Tongue and Declare the Word
Fear loves to speak, but faith must speak louder. In the face of insecurity, stop re-sharing terrifying rumors and start declaring God’s promises over your life.
What to do: Instead of saying, “We aren’t safe anywhere,” declare, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.” (Psalm 18:2). Your words have power.

3. Walk in Wisdom and Discernment
Divine security does not mean spiritual carelessness. God gives us Holy Spirit discernment and common sense as tools of protection.
What to do: Pay attention to nudges from the Holy Spirit. If you feel a sudden prompt to avoid a certain route, change your timing, or stay indoors—obey it. God often protects us through promptings.

4. Put on the Full Armor of God
Physical threats often start as spiritual warfare meant to paralyze you with fear. Ephesians 6 instructs us to take up the shield of faith to quench the fiery darts of the enemy.
What to do: Every morning, consciously anchor your mind in peace, truth, and faith. A mind stayed on God is a fortress the enemy cannot breach.

You Are Not Alone
The chariots of fire that surrounded Elisha haven’t retired. The God who divided the Red Sea and kept Daniel safe in a den of hungry lions is the exact same God watching over you today. When the news tells you that you are vulnerable, look to the Word that reminds you that you are hidden in Christ.
No matter how loud the storm rages, you can sleep in peace tonight. You are secured by God.
