A few years ago, a young man walked up to me after a leadership conference, notebook in hand, and asked if he could “pick my brain sometime.” We exchanged numbers. He called once, asked a few scattered questions, and never followed up again. Contrast that with another young woman from the same event — she came with a clear question, followed up within 48 hours with a thank-you note and a specific action she’d taken from our conversation, and asked if she could check in monthly. Five years later, she’s running her own organization, and I still get updates from her.
Same opportunity. Two completely different outcomes. The difference wasn’t talent — it was how each person showed up to the relationship.
Mentorship is not a transaction — it’s a partnership.
If you’re a mentee hoping to grow, here’s what you need to do to make the most of it.
1. Come prepared, every time.
Don’t waste your mentor’s time figuring out what to ask. Walk in with specific questions, challenges, or updates.
2. Take action between conversations.
A mentor invests more in someone who’s clearly doing the work, not just listening to advice.
3. Communicate consistently.
You don’t need weekly calls — but regular, brief updates keep the relationship alive and show respect for their time.
4. Be coachable.
Receive feedback without defensiveness. The moment you start explaining why the advice doesn’t apply to you, you stop growing.
5. Give back where you can.
Share an article, make an introduction, or simply express gratitude. Mentorship flows both ways.
The leaders who go furthest aren’t the most naturally gifted — they’re the ones who know how to *receive*. Your mentor can open doors, but only you can walk through them with consistency and follow-through.
