Today the world celebrates fathers. Cards are being signed, phones are ringing, tables are being set, and children everywhere are finding ways to say two words that carry more weight than most people realize:
Thank you, Dad.
But I want to take you deeper than the celebration today. I want to show you why fathers deserve to be honoured — not just by culture, not just by tradition — but by the very nature of God Himself.
Because here is what stopped me in my tracks this Father’s Day:
When God chose a name to reveal how He relates to us, He didn’t say Master. He didn’t say Ruler. He didn’t say Creator — though He is all of these.
He said: Father.
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name…” — Matthew 6:9
That One Word Changes Everything
God is intentional. Every word in Scripture is chosen. So when Jesus — who knew the Father more intimately than anyone — taught us to approach God, He opened with Father, it was not casual. It was architectural.
It means fatherhood is not a human invention. It is a divine institution. God didn’t model Himself after earthly fathers — earthly fathers were always meant to model themselves after Him.
That is why a good father feels sacred. Because he is.
This Is What God Our Father Looks Like — And What Earthly Fathers Are Called to Reflect
1. He Provides Before You Ask
“Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” (Matthew 6:8)
A father who reflects God doesn’t wait for desperation. He anticipates. He prepares. He creates the environment before the need announces itself.
2. He Speaks Identity Before Performance
Before Jesus performed a single miracle, the Father declared: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)
Identity before achievement. Worth before output. Every child needs a father who names them before the world labels them.
3. He Disciplines Because He Loves
“The Lord disciplines the one He loves, as a father the son he delights in.” (Proverbs 3:12)
The greatest fathers understand that correction is not rejection. It is investment. You only shape what you plan to use greatly.
4. He Runs Back Toward You
In the parable of the prodigal son, the hero is not the son who returned — it is the father who ran. Who saw him from a distance. Who didn’t wait. Who embraced before explanation. (Luke 15:20)
That is the Father’s heart. And it is the heart every earthly father is called to carry.
To Every Father on This Special Day
You are not just a man with children. You are a steward of one of God’s most sacred callings.
The way you speak to your child writes theology on their heart. They will often understand God the way they first understood you. Your presence is not small — it is formative. Your words are not just words — they are seeds.
On this Father’s Day, I want to say to every man faithfully carrying this assignment:
God saw fit to share His title with you. That is not ordinary. That is holy.
Keep showing up. Keep speaking life. Keep being the reflection your children need to see.
And to those who have lost their fathers, or whose fathers were absent — may you experience today the love of the One who called Himself Father first, and has never left.
Prayer for Father’s Day:
Father God, we honour You today — the original Father, the perfect Father. We thank You for the earthly fathers who have reflected Your love, Your strength, and Your grace. Strengthen every man carrying this assignment today. Heal every heart wounded by an absent father. And let every child — no matter their story — know the love of a Father who runs toward them. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
